Diabetes can have devastating consequences on the affected but researchers seem to have uncovered a debatable benefit for diabetics but how valuable is this benefit in the grand scheme of things.

NEWPORT, WALES, February 14, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ — A preliminary report presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes Meeting in Portugal recently, highlighted a potential ‘benefit’ of Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is known to have numerous complications especially when poorly controlled over a long time.

A lot of Type 2 diabetics will require insulin and other blood sugar lowering medications to control blood sugar. Overzealous treatment can sometimes lead to symptoms of low blood sugar and if left unaddressed can become life-threatening.

Learning how to treat low blood sugar is an essential tool in the management of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Swedish researchers looked at the incidence of aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection in 448,000 Type 2 diabetics from the Swedish National Diabetes Register comparing them to 2.2 million non-diabetics.

The researchers found that Type 2 diabetics were 28% less likely to develop aortic aneurysm and were also 47% less likely to develop aortic dissection compared to non-diabetics.

Aneurysm refers to weakness of the wall of a blood vessel. Aortic aneurysm is when the wall of the major vessel carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body is weakened.

Aortic dissection is when the wall of this major blood vessel is compromised to the point where the layers of the vessel wall are split allowing blood flow to rip the wall further.

Both aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection are fatal. So, people with Type 2 diabetes may feel protected by this research finding. Hardening of the arteries by elevated blood sugar levels may be an explanation for this research finding.

However, this ‘benefit’ of Type 2 diabetes is cancelled by the fact that heart disease inclusive of heart attacks and strokes are more common in diabetics. It is also a known fact that these downsides of heart disease and strokes are more common in the general population than aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection.

So, whilst the underlying hardening of the blood vessels may be protective of two less common problem, it is also the cause of much more common potential killers.

It therefore pays to have blood sugars under strict control to prevent complications of Type 2 diabetes.
